high five for friday

TGIF!  Finally it’s Friday! Yay!  Friday could not have come soon enough this week.

1.  Today is my Dad’s birthday! Happy Birthday to you Papa!  He loves to cook rather than go out to eat, so I am sure this weekend will be filled with many home cooked meals.  (Trust me, I’m not complaining!)

2.  I made a purchase on eBay a couple of weeks ago and it arrived this week – new to me Lilly Pulitzer pants!  The are a smidge big, but so cute a fun! Plus I got a great deal, so heading to the tailor for a few alterations won’t be a big deal.

3. Picked up my sweet friend, Stephanie’s French Bulldog, Henry,  from boarding and hung out with him for a few hours on Sunday.  He is hysterical!  He loves riding in the car – he just lays down and falls asleep.  He is shockingly strong for his size…he was definitely the one taking me for a walk on the leash not the other way around.

4.  My parents had my grandparents over for dinner one night this week and I joined them.  It’s always fun to get to hang out with all of them.  My grandparents just returned from a vacation so we got the full run down of the trip.  Tweed loves seeing them too!

5.  I hope to be able to carve out a bit of time to keep working on my new top!  I am sewing a pretty advanced (at least for me) pattern.  I will share all about how this project goes when it is complete.  I can’t wait to get the top finished – I have a whole outfit in my mind that I am dying to wear!

project time

You know how you start a project and think, oh this will take like 5 hours or so, and then you actually work on the project and it takes you 3+ days?!?  No, just me?!  Well, this is exactly how the painting project went this past weekend.

It started off great.  Step 1 – turn up the jams, obviously.  Step 2 – move the furniture to the other side of the room.  Step 3 – tape the walls so that I don’t paint on the ceiling, wood work, etc.  (This took a long time but went off with out a hitch)

Step 4 – spread drop cloths and paint.  This was easier than expected.  I have to say I felt a bit like I was on TLC’s Trading Spaces (the home improvement show I grew up on) painting walls, except they are my walls not my friend or neighbor’s walls.  If only Paige Davis was here to help and cheer me on!  Ty Pennington (pre – Extreme Makeover Home Edition)was not here to be my carpenter….I mean a girl can dream.  The good news –  I only hit the ceiling with the roller once! After completing the painting,  I removed the tape and the walls were complete.

almost done

Here is where things got a little dicey.  I went to plug back in my internet and cable cords and nothing…whole kit and caboodle done-zo.  Those of you who know me, know that I am BEYOND obsessed with TV and have mine on almost all the time when I am home.  So, this system being down was not making me happy.  Internet is also a vital part of my life, too, especially when I needed to chat with the tech support people who no longer talk on the phone, but rather online chat with you to resolve you cable/internet problems.  So, long story short, they had to send out a tech to fix the problem.  Which they did, on a Sunday no less.  Much appreciated, trust me!  Well, during all of these issues, the furniture couldn’t be moved back into its rightful homes because it would block the repair work.  Enter, the work week.

Fast forward to Wednesday night after work.  My Dad came over and replaced the outlets and switch plates in the room and helped me move the furniture, he’s pretty handy like that.  So, the furniture is now in place.  I know what you’re thinking, now onto the end result picture…how about a really its still a work in progress picture…take a look.

high five for friday

What a great week, birthday, wedding, road trip, and the 4th! Sheesh that’s a lot when I look back at it.

1.  Friday was my birthday.  After a quick breakfast and hair cut, I hopped in the car and headed down to Austin for the weekend.  I stayed in Georgetown with longtime family friends who pampered me for my birthday left and right!  It was SO sweet of them!

2. My friend Joanna got married on Saturday and I had the honor of doing a reading and being in her house party.  It was so much fun!  The bride and groom are high school sweethearts so it is about time the tied the knot.    Joanna and I bonded over numerous group projects, groups papers (yes, apparently that is a thing) and History of Costume flashcards in college and have been friends ever since.  Here we are at the rehearsal dinner and then at reception.

3.  Sunday I spent the day with our family friends.  We drank tea from their visit to England, made delicious orange muffins (I mostly supervised), and went to a GREAT burger joint, Mighty Fine Burger.  Also, we watched their dog, Sister, run around the backyard constantly on the hunt for prey.  Luckily she didn’t find any this time, although I hear she definitely wins in battles against birds.  I was sad to have to pack up and head back to the Big D.

4.  Hope everyone had a great 4th!  Tweed was VERY patriotic in his stars and stripes bandana.  Still loving his new haircut, by the way – shorter ears are the way to go!

5.  My goal for the weekend is to at least paint the last 2 walls of my bedroom.  I hope that by writing this here, I will have the accountability and push I need to complete this task.  Wish me luck!!

something i have been working on…

My fingers have been busily working away on a sewing project for the past couple of weeks.  You see, I made a trade with a friend.  She painted my room and I made her couch pillow shams.  11 couch pillow shams to be exact.  Sewing is really more of my realm of expertise than painting, or so I think.  I can’t say I have actually painted a wall before, but I am definitely comfortable sewing.  It was a great trade!  Yes, I did say 11 pillow shams (it’s a big couch).  I love the end result and so I had to share it.

The pattern combination that my friend chose was fun to sew and relatively easy to match up for the different pieces.  I must say 11 is a lot of pillows.

This is my second sewing project of 2013.  Back in January, I created a twin duvet cover for another friend.  She put it in her son’s room.  The funny cats make a great slightly punk rock room for her 4-year-old boy, which is exactly their style.

Owen's Duvet

Getting back into sewing has really renewed my interest in and love of sewing.  So, attention friends:  I would like to offer my services (for a reasonable fee) to sew any fun household decor.  Let me know what your ideas are in an email (theleighshops@gmail.com) and we can go from there.

Next project a tunic and dress just for yours truly with 2 great fabrics from City Craft (I sang this store’s praises here).  More on that later! I am sure it will be a process, after all there are set in sleeves.

pinterest ponderings

I just love Pinterest!  I typically plan on spending just a few minutes pinning away and suddenly I look at the clock and its been 45 minutes.  Clearly I have a problem, but I can’t say that I care.  Here are a few pins that I love today!  (I have links to the original items, all the pins can be found on my pinterest boards.)

pink and orange hom

image This room encompasses many of my favorite colors.  I love the mixing of prints and patterns while staying true to the color palette.  As I decorate my new place, I hope to encompass several of these elements.

image  I will take any excuse to craft.  I really need to set aside more time to do this, lately its been more craft pinning than actual crafting.  These would be so cool to make and hang one over my bed.  Now to decide what it should say.

friends

image Whenever things need to be moved, this is the image that comes to mind. Naturally, followed by a loud exclamation, “PIVOT! PIVOT!”  Friends is just the best show of all time, hands down.  What is your favorite Friends moment?
